The Riksbank raises the repo rate with 25 basis points to a level of -0.25 per cent. The hike is the first in seven years. The bank motivates its decision by pointing to a strong economy as well as the outlook for maintaining inflation around the 2 per cent target being favourable.

The Riksbank raises the repo rate with 25 basis points to a level of -0.25 per cent. The hike is the first in seven years.

The bank motivates its decision by pointing to a strong economy as well as the outlook for maintaining inflation around the 2 per cent target being favourable.

“As inflation and inflation expectations have become established at around 2 per cent, the need for a highly expansionary monetary policy has decreased slightly,” the bank writes in a press release.

The Riksbank forecasts a second hike probably occurring during the second half of 2019.

“Deputy Governor Per Jansson entered a reservation against the decision to raise the repo rate and did not support the repo-rate path in the Monetary Policy Report. Mr Jansson referred to the considerable uncertainty remaining over the strength of the more persistent rate of inflation,” the Riksbank writes.
